About Compress image

Upload forms are blunt: maximum 200 KB, maximum 500 KB, maximum 1 MB. A phone photo is ten times that. Name the size you are allowed and the highest quality that still fits is found for you, by encoding the image repeatedly and narrowing in — rather than making you guess at a quality percentage.

Questions

How do I get a photo under 200 KB or 500 KB?
Type that figure as the target. The image is encoded at several quality levels, narrowing in on the largest file that still fits — the largest one is the best-looking one. If quality alone cannot reach the target, turn on the dimension cap so the pixel size comes down too.
Why is PNG not offered as an output?
PNG is lossless: it has no quality dial, so it cannot be tuned towards a size target. JPG is the right choice for photographs and scans. WebP is offered too and is meaningfully smaller at the same quality, but check that the site you are uploading to accepts it.
It could not reach my target.
The tool tells you rather than quietly missing it. Very large images hit a floor where quality alone is not enough — turn on “Also cap the dimensions” and set the longest side to, say, 1600 pixels. Reducing pixels saves far more than reducing quality, and usually looks better than a heavily compressed full-size image.
What happens to a transparent background?
It is filled with white, because JPG cannot store transparency. If transparency matters, use Convert image to produce a PNG or WebP instead.
Can I compress several images at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; the target applies to each one individually, and everything can be downloaded as a single .zip.
