About Add page numbers
Once several documents have been merged, or a report has been assembled from parts, the pages need numbering — often with a total, so a reader can tell whether anything is missing. Choose the position and format and the numbers are drawn into the file.
How it works
- 1Pick a PDF.
- 2Choose where the number sits, how it reads, and whether to leave a cover page unnumbered.
- 3Press Add page numbers and download the numbered document.
Questions
- Can I show “3 of 12” rather than just “3”?
- Yes. Four formats are available: 3, 3 / 12, Page 3, and Page 3 of 12. The total is counted from the pages actually being numbered, so it stays correct when you skip a cover page.
- My document has a cover sheet that should not be numbered.
- Turn on “Leave the first page unnumbered”. Counting then starts at the second page, and the total reflects that.
- Can numbering start at something other than 1?
- Yes — set “Start counting at” to any value. Useful when the document is one section of a larger bound report and has to continue an existing sequence.
- Will the numbers cover existing content?
- They are drawn in the margin, about a centimetre from the edge. If your document already has content there, or already has its own numbering, move the position or reduce the text size.
- Is adding page numbers free to use?
- Yes, completely, with no account, no watermark on the output, no daily limit and no paid tier. Because your device does the work, running this costs us nothing but hosting a few static files.
