About PDF to Word
Someone sends a PDF and asks for a change. This pulls the words back out into an editable .docx, reconstructing paragraphs, headings and emphasis from the geometry of the page. It recovers content, not design — and it says so, because tools that promise otherwise usually hand back something worse.
How it works

Questions
- Why does the Word file not look like the PDF?
- Because a PDF does not store paragraphs. It stores glyphs at coordinates — the paragraph breaks, heading levels and column structure were thrown away when the file was written. They are inferred back from geometry: line spacing, how far each line runs before it stops, relative font size, indentation. That works well on ordinary prose and imperfectly on complex layouts. No tool recovers the original design, because the information is not in the file.
- It produced an almost empty document.
- Your PDF is a scan: it holds a photograph of text rather than text. The tool detects this and says so. Extracting words from an image requires OCR, which this site does not do.
- What is recovered, and what is not?
- Recovered: the text, paragraph breaks, heading levels, bold and italic, centred lines, page breaks. Not recovered: multiple columns, tables as tables, images, headers and footers, exact fonts and spacing.
- The lines are broken in odd places.
- Lines are joined into paragraphs when the previous line ran the full width of the text column, which is how prose behaves. Documents with narrow columns, wide word spacing or heavy indentation can defeat that. For tables, PDF to Excel is a better fit; to keep every line exactly as it appears, use PDF to text.
- Are words split across a line break repaired?
- Yes. A word hyphenated at the end of a line is rejoined into one word, and the hyphen is removed.
